Why I Take Family Photos Every Year (And Why It Matters Even More as a Minimal Mom)

Intentional Living, Motherhood, and Family Photography in Orange County & Riverside
In 2021, I started my journey into minimalism.
It didn’t start in a beautiful, aesthetic way.
It actually started from a place of overwhelm.
During the pandemic, I found myself turning to shopping as a coping mechanism. It was a form of escapism, something that gave me a quick sense of control and comfort during a time when everything felt uncertain.
But over time, I realized something hard:
All that “stuff” wasn’t adding value to my life.
It was adding noise.
Where It Started: My Closet
My minimal journey didn’t begin with my whole house.
It started with my closet.
Piece by piece, I began letting go of things that didn’t serve me… clothes I didn’t wear, items I bought impulsively or for a fantasy self that didn’t exist, things that no longer felt like me or no longer fits.
And as I decluttered physically, something else started happening:
I began to feel lighter mentally.
That one small shift started to ripple into other areas of my life.
Minimalism Became Intentional Living
What began as “having less” slowly became something much deeper.
It became about:
• How I spend my time
• What I say yes to
• What I bring into my home
• What I want my kid to remember
• What actually matters at the end of the day
Minimalism turned into intentional living.
And with that shift, my perspective on family photos completely changed.

Why I Now Value Family Photos More Than Ever
As I’ve simplified my life, I’ve become much more selective about what I keep or bring into my home.
Everything in our home has to answer one question:
Does this add value to our lives?
Family photos are an easy YES.
Because unlike most things, they don’t lose value over time.
They gain it.
A photo I took last year already feels more meaningful today.
A photo from two years ago feels even more special.
And I know five, ten, twenty years from now… they’ll mean even more.
Time Moves Faster Than We Realize
Becoming a mom changes how you experience time.
Kids grow in what feels like overnight.
The baby you rocked to sleep suddenly doesn’t want to be held.
The toddler who needed you for everything becomes independent.
And something that hits even deeper:
Our parents are getting older too.
There are only so many seasons where everyone is here, together, as they are right now.
That realization changed everything.
Because time is the one thing we can’t declutter later.
Why I Document Our Family Every Year (even when it’s hard)
Yes, even as a professional photographer, it still gets hard for me to do this every year.
The struggle is real and shared.
But I try my best to capture our family photos twice a year.
Once for the holidays when we are with our extended families.
Then again during our kid’s birthday month.
Not because I want more “things,”
but because I want to hold onto what matters.
We don’t need more toys.
We don’t need more stuff.
But we will always want:
• memories
• connection
• proof of this season
• reminders of who we were
Family photos give us that.
The Most Meaningful Gift Isn’t Something You Buy
As I’ve stepped away from consumer-driven habits, I’ve also rethought how we give gifts.
And I’ve realized something:
Photos are one of the most meaningful gifts you can give and receive.
For grandparents.
For your kids.
For yourself.
Because instead of something that gets used once or forgotten,
you’re giving something that lasts.
Something that doesn’t end up being clutter.
Something that only becomes more cherished with time.
This Is Why Picture Day Means So Much to Me
This is also why the service I offer means more to me now than ever before.
Picture Day isn’t about creating more.
It’s about preserving what already exists.
It’s about:
• making the process simple
• removing decision fatigue
• creating space for real moments
• and giving families something that truly matters
And even beyond that, it’s about doing good through photography.
Because every session also gives back.
So not only are you documenting your family,
you’re contributing to something bigger.
Minimalism Isn’t About Having Nothing
It’s about choosing what matters most and having that.
And for me, family photos are at the top of that list.
They’re not clutter.
They’re physical representation of belonging.
They’re connection.
They’re a way of holding onto time, even as it moves faster than we want it to.
If you’re on a minimal or intentional living journey and wondering what’s truly worth keeping…
I hope this reminds you:
Photos aren’t just pictures.
They’re one of the few things in life that only become more valuable with time.
If you’re ready for a simple, intentional family photo experience in Orange County or Riverside, I’d love to photograph your family.
